The guardrail column is the main load-bearing component of the guardrail, and its buried depth is directly related to the overall protective effect of the guardrail when it encounters a vehicle collision. At present, the pile pulling method adopted is not only time-consuming and labor-intensive, but also has low detection efficiency. Nondestructive testing methods include elastic wave method and ultrasonic method. According to the propagation characteristics of elastic wave and ultrasonic wave in the steel pipe column, the burial depth of the column is non-destructively tested.
Chen Zhong, a senior engineer of Jiangsu Transportation Planning and Design Institute Co., Ltd., published a research paper on "Methods for Testing the Buried Depth of Highway Guardrail Columns Based on Elastic Waves and Ultrasonic Waves" on "China Highway". In this paper, the guardrail column that has been installed on the road is randomly selected and the results of the elastic wave method and the ultrasonic method are summarized. The elastic wave method is easy to operate and has high test accuracy, which can be used as the first choice for column test.
